They’re getting everybody to “paint” the internet purple to raise awareness about violence against women and also raising funds for the cause via special cupcake bake sales.

Last Thursday  saw the latest Bright One Social take place, with over 30 people crowding into the back room at The Crown Tavern in Clerkenwell, London, to get to know each other a little better and find out what Bright One is up to.

We had a fantastic time meeting our volunteers, those interested in volunteering with us, and those who just wanted to hang out with the Bright One community. And of course everyone picked up the rather popular Bright One badge and stickers.

It was also great to see our special guest, Regina from the Pixel Project, chatting to our volunteers about best practises for working with clients on a Bright One project and all about the fantastic work that her cause is doing.

The Celebrity Male Role Model Pixel Reveal campaign is our flagship fundraiser that will raise US$1 million for the Women’s Aid Organisation of Malaysia & the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in the US.

How? By unveiling, pixel by pixel, an exclusive mystery collage of celebrity male role model portraits. As each pixel is removed, more of the picture will be unveiled. With pixels costing only US$1 each and the smallest donation amount set at US$5, everyone can take part!

The Pixel Project, a global volunteer-led online awareness and fund raising organisation working to end Violence Against Women (VAW), have just launched their “Paint It Purple” campaign in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2010.

The “Paint It Purple” campaign is a global effort to help raise awareness about Domestic Violence (DV) and other forms of Violence Against Women (VAW) around the world.

The campaign involves inspiring a social media movement, encouraging the online community to help The Pixel Project paint the Internet purple with twibbons, buttons, banners and blogskins. across Twitter, Facebook, blogs and websites.

The campaign will combine its social media movement to paint the Internet purple with “Paint It Purple” parties across the globe throughout October 2010. The “Paint It Purple” parties are social events designed to raise funds and awareness for The Pixel Project and partnering VAW organisations worldwide. Funds will be raised through the largest charity cupcake bake sale of the year, featuring cupcakes with the campaign’s signature purple-and-white ribbon signifying men and women working together to end VAW. All “Paint It Purple” party participants will also attend the party dressed in purple and record their YouTube Pixel Project PSAs for The Pixel Project’s Wall of Support.

In addition, all participants in any of the “Paint It Purple” campaign activities, be it the “Paint It Purple” parties or social media campaign, will each be counted as an “action” towards helping UNIFEM’s “Say NO – UNiTE” campaign’s bid to raise 1 million grassroots actions against VAW by November 2010.

As part of this campaign, “Paint It Purple” Parties will be held by The Pixel Project in conjunction with our partners and any other VAW organisation or grassroots community group who wish to:

1. Raise awareness about DV and all forms of VAW by recording public service announcements from all party participants to grow a global YouTube chorus calling for an end to VAW.
2. Jointly raise funds for their chosen VAW/DV charity and The Pixel Project through the biggest charity cupcake bake sale of 2010 in aid of the VAW cause.

All participants in “Paint It Purple” will each be counted as an “action” towards helping UNIFEM’s “Say NO – UNiTE” campaign’s bid to raise 1 million grassroots actions against VAW by November 2010:

The Pixel Project invites all Rhodes Scholars to participate in this campaign, particularly if you have an interest in women’s issues or if you work with nonprofits working to end VAW.

There are 3 types of “Paint It Purple” parties:

1. Official Parties – Held by VAW non profits worldwide throughout October to raise funds and record PSAs calling for an end to violence against women on The Pixel Project’s “Wall of Support”.

We currently have parties confirmed for Kuala Lumpur, Toronto, Cardiff, Denver and Austin with more parties due to be confirmed in Cairo, Washington DC, New York City, London and Singapore.

2. Private Parties – Held by cause supporters with their families and friends throughout October to eat cupcakes and record PSAs calling for an end to violence against women worldwide.

3. A virtual blog party (2 October 2010) for bloggers to showcase their PSAs, share their baking skills with cupcakes and cupcake recipes and share thoughts on violence against women.

The Wall of Support is the latest innovation from The Pixel Project in a series of interactive and interconnected social media-based community initiatives intended to unite people from all walks of life to speak up against VAW. The video endorsements are uploaded to YouTube and displayed on the Wall of Support page in the Community Buzz section of The Pixel Project’s website (http://www.thepixelproject.net). Guidelines for making and submitting a video can be found on the website as well.
